Grand Theatre, Leeds
It might have been a mid week show but the cast gave their all - as usual. Neither were they let down by the audience. The theatre was full and the applause and cheering just went on and on. Graham started applauding the audience back at one point - he just couldn't go on until the noise eventually decreased.
This is the first time that we've seen James Head as Jacob/Potiphar. We were quite impressed, he really acted the parts well and his face was full of emotion. When he
discovered Jo & wife together, his roars of rage were just that - roars. In the past some Jacob/Potiphar's have been a bit weak.
A special mention must be made of Lisa Quibell. We've never heard her singing by herself in the part of narrator, but when she takes the part of handmaiden she really puts her all into it. Everytime we've seen her she really looks as if she's enjoying herself and her energy and enthusiasm pours out for all to see - a real pleasure.
Graham belted the numbers out in his usual "cheeky Joseph" style and the audience loved him for it. He looked, nor sounded, any the worse for his time off ill. At the end of the show he carried the audience to a peak of excitement, clapping, cheering, whistling and then he suddenly stopped singing ...................... and there was the audience, surprised, quite loudly still singing away. We haven't seen that being done before in Jo. It was great!
As Pharaoh, Trevor rocked the crowd and made some little girls (and their mother no doubt) very happy by waving to them and blowing them kisses.
Vivienne Carlyle was perfection as The Narrator and let's be honest, this girl works hard - she's never off the stage and plays the part beautifully.
It really is unfair to pick people out, because the whole cast were fabulous, from the "old" stagers like John Melvin (will they ever be able to find another fire eater should he leave!) to the very young Craig Gallivan who played Benjamin so well.
